The editing process:
For this particular image I decided to add layers in to change the colours of the image, I wanted to make the sunset colours in the background more noticeable.

So to do this I started by changing the colours of the image to make the reds more noticeable and vivid. To do this I had to play around will all the colours to see which would make the colours that I wanted to be brighter more vivid.

Following this I managed to use this curves layer to make the trees darker, while also managing to make the grass brighter and the sky vibrant.

This is the outcome of the editing process:

The Original Image

The editing process:

To create the effect I wanted on this image I decided to add different layers that change the images colours or brightness.

I started by editing the brightness and contrast of the image, I decided that to create a dark eerie outcome that I would have to make it a bit darker and make the contrast stronger and therefore more noticeable.

Following this I then changed the hue and saturation of the image on another layer, I did this so that the image would loose the bright colours and become more eerie looking.

After changing the hue and saturation I again changed the brightness/contrast a little bit more to create the effect I wanted, and also because I found the pathway and trees to be a little too bright.

I selected to changed the specific colours as I didn't want the pathway so bright or the greens to be so vibrant, so to do this I added the layer onto the image and choose the green colour and then manipulated this magenta/cyan/yellow/black until the image finally looked and had the atmospheric outcome I intended.

Dark Version

For this bright version I again started with the brightness/contrast and made the image a lot brighter and the contrast stronger.

Following this I then changed the hue and saturation until the colours were brighter, more vivid and there were more colours noticeable in the image.

I also decided to change the vibrancy and I wanted to create an image that was noticeably bright and made nature look almost unreal. So I changed the vibrancy setting to make the colours more vivid.

I selected to changed the specific colours as I didn't want the pathway so light or the greens to be so dull, so to do this I added the layer onto the image and choose the green colour and then manipulated this magenta/cyan/yellow/black until the image finally looked and had the bright vivid atmospheric outcome I intended.

AO3- Task 2- Trial Shots

Trial Shots

Here are some photos from my test shoot. Most of these photos I like the idea of however they could have been photographed better. Some had lighting issues while some weren't properly in focus. However this test shoot allowed me to have places and locations where I could go back and re shoot the photos. Especially because it helped me find some places that had leading lines or parts of the woods that I could use to frame an image. This test shoot also helped as it allowed me to try and experiment with taking the photos and trying new angles to see what they would look like.

AO3- Task 2- Mood-board

This is the mood-board I created, it includes all my ideas and thoughts about this photography task. I had chosen Landscape photography, so I looked at the types of photos that was within this application. After looking through I decided to photos that had a focus, for example the leading lines. I also liked the different colours and natural time of day atmospheres that were within all the images I was looking at.

AO3- Task 1- Past and Present Landscape Photography/Photographers

Past and Present Landscape Photographers

Ansel Adams Ansel Adams was a landscape photographer and environmentalist who was born in 1902 and passed away in 1984, the main parts of his career were focused in the 1920’s-1970’s. As Ansel Adams was a focused activist for wilderness and the environment, he did a lot of work with conservation, however his images of wild America were one of the great ways he helped influence others. Adams constantly fought for new parks and wilderness areas as well as the idea of low usage of resources as he thought against overbuilt highways and man made features.

Adams tended to use large format cameras as they had a high resolution which helped produce his extremely high quality and sharp detailed images. Adams also created the ‘Zone system’ which helped deal with exposure and development; this allowed photographers to create a photo that creatively reflected the visual image they had envisioned. Although many photographers use colour, he choose to do many of his landscape photos in black and white.

The simplicity of this black and white landscape image clearly shows the photographers intended purpose, that is which to show the beauty of nature through the river trailing through towards the mountains in the background. The photo includes no lines of directions except for the slight line below the mountains, otherwise this image only includes the curvy organic shape of the river. This breaks up the image making it seem uncrowded and creating more of an open effect. It is completely balanced with symmetrical focus. The lighting is mostly bright on the water which creates a large emphasises on it, this therefore makes the background have a sharp contrast. The dynamic range is quite large, having the brightest points as the water and parts of the sky while the darkest is the trees closest to the camera and the bottom parts of the mountains.

Peter Lik

Peter Lik is a landscape photographer, that contrasts with Ansel Adams as he is known for use of bright vivid colours in his photographs. Born in 1959, he has been an active photographer since 1984.

Lik was introduced to panoramic cameras in the beginning of his career and continued to use this throughout. He uses FujiFlex silver-halide paper to create brighter and more vivid colours, this is because it accentuates the light and colours.

This abstract landscape photo includes vivid colours to help portray the beauty and brightness of nature. The colourful aspect contrasts to Ansel Adams image, as his in focus on the simplicity of nature while conveying it in black and white. Although the image has a balanced focus, the main subject of the photo is a tree; the tree is the organic shape that is being mostly the thing for the viewers to focus on. The orange colour is very bright and vibrant, the colour usually represents joy or happiness. The darker parts of the image includes the rocks and the branches on the tree. Because of the orange leaves the dark branches appear even more noticeable, this creating a depth to the photo as it almost looks like the branches are reaching out of the it.
Tree branches appear more noticeable against the bright colours, however balanced focus.

AO3- Task 1- My Idea

Brainstorming my Idea

Looking at the lines and organic shapes within photography of landscape. To do this I would need to focus on the line directions and what I want to show within my photography. I will also look at the pathways throughout the woods to see the direction and see if I can use that to produce an image that has directional emphasis. I could also look at using the trees to frame an image and produce more closed in photos. During this I also want to try and make sure the texture of any parts of the woods look quite realistic, and I may even Photoshop them to be surreal.

I'm going to look at taking photos at the different times of the day, this is so I can experiment with the looks and colours of the sunsets or early morning softness.

My main idea is to produce images with lines and framing to be the main focus of the image. I may also try and create bright and vivid versions of the image, while also creating contrasting dark and eerie images. When producing them I would have a set of bright or a set of dark, or even a set of contrasting finished pieces.

Photography locations:
Whitleigh Wood
Woodland Wood
Plym Bridge

Taking the photos:
Best to have f16-f32 to get a bigger depth of field, ensuring the whole image is in focus, not just one section.
This may mean the exposure time is large - which would create a problem if it is windy, this is because if it is windy and the trees are moving it is more likely to blur.

AO3- Task 1- Inspiration (Photos I'd like to get similar images to)

Inspiration for my Images

These images are images I found while looking online and are images that I decided I liked the look of, these are images I would like to create similar photos to.

The strong use of leading lines in the images above creates a strong feel to the images, it is an effect and technique that I am going to use when taking my own images. The use of the leading lines on either side of the image side you a center point which appears to be the focus, it also frames the images.

I will also, like all of the images above, use the lighting and time of day to create a different mood to the images I take. For example this image is quite foggy which makes it appear quite eerie.

When it comes to the editing, these are images that I may try to create a similar style to, I like the use of bright colours to show the beauty of nature.

The images above have all been captured in a way to produce pictures that make the water look surreal, almost like it is fake, this enhance the beauty of nature making it seem quite magical.

I like these two images because the simplicity of them helps portray how beautiful nature is and how real it is, compared to the man made buildings etc.
